Day 1: Lisbon → Fatima (130 km)

In the morning, our driver-guide will meet you at the pre-arranged time and location to begin the journey. Fátima – one of the world’s most important Catholic pilgrimage destinations, famous for the 1917 apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children. Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary: Built in 1928 to commemorate the 1917 apparitions; it houses the tombs of Francisco, Jacinta and Sister Lúcia. Chapel of the Apparitions: Built in 1919 on the exact site of the apparitions; a solemn shrine marking where the holm oak once stood. Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity: Consecrated in 2007; Portugal’s largest church, modern minimalist design, pillar-free interior and ~8,000 seats. Interactive Museum – Fátima Miracle: Multimedia exhibits recreating the events of 1917. Aljustrel Village: Visit the homes of the three shepherd children and learn about the origins of the Fátima story. Valinhos: A route the children walked daily; another reported apparition site with Stations of the Cross and memorials.

Day 2: Fatima → Coimbra → Mealhada → Aveiro → Porto (225 km)

University of Coimbra – Portugal’s oldest university; its historic complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Joanina Library: A lavish Baroque library often ranked among the world’s most beautiful; holds ~ 60-70k volumes (16th–18th centuries) and famously uses bats to protect books from insects. Royal Palace & St. Michael’s Chapel: Once a royal residence; admire the ornate chapel with azulejo tiles, Baroque organ and royal box. University Tower (Goat Tower): Climb for sweeping views over Coimbra and the Mondego River. Mealhada – the ‘capital’ of Bairrada-style roast suckling pig, perfect for a classic Portuguese meal. Famous roast suckling pig restaurants: Pedro dos Leitões and Rei dos Leitões (local historic favorites). Pair with Bairrada sparkling wine for the classic combination. Aveiro – known as the ‘Venice of Portugal’ for its canals and colorful boats. Moliceiro boat cruise: A ~45-minute ride on traditional flat-bottom boats through the canals, passing Art Nouveau buildings. Aveiro Museum: Housed in a former convent; explore local religious heritage, including the tomb of Princess St. Joana and gilded woodcarvings. Old Train Station: Famous for its beautiful blue-and-white azulejo panels depicting local history and culture.

Day 3: Porto → Full-day City Sightseeing

Porto – the origin of the name ‘Portugal’ and Port wine; a UNESCO World Heritage city. São Bento Station: Often called one of the world’s most beautiful train stations, featuring over 20,000 azulejo tiles narrating Portuguese history. Clérigos Tower & Church: A city landmark; climb the tower for panoramic views. The church blends elegant Baroque curves with refined decoration. Livraria Lello: A beloved bookshop and architectural gem; legends link its iconic red staircase to inspiration for the Harry Potter series. Port Wine Cellars (optional): Visit famous lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia (advance booking recommended) to learn production and enjoy tastings. Douro River cruise (optional): About 50 minutes—enjoy riverfront scenery, terraced vineyards and views of Porto’s bridges.

Day 4: Porto → Obidos → Sintra → Lisbon (360 km)

Óbidos – a charming medieval town, said to have been a wedding gift from King Dinis to the queen. Óbidos Castle: A hilltop medieval castle now converted into a historic luxury hotel; walk the walls for views over the town and countryside. Church of Santa Maria: The main town church on the central square; known for 17th-century azulejo tiles. King Sebastian, I married here at age 10 (1575). Sintra – renowned for Romantic architecture, fairytale palaces and castles; a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Pena Palace: A colorful hilltop palace blending Gothic, Renaissance, Moorish and Manueline styles; spectacular viewpoints over the surrounding park. Quinta da Regaleira: A mysterious estate with Gothic-inspired architecture, gardens and the famous Initiation Well leading to underground tunnels. Moorish Castle: Medieval fortifications along the ridge with dramatic views over the mountains and coastline. Sintra National Palace: One of Portugal’s best-preserved medieval royal palaces, recognized by its twin conical chimneys. Arrive Lisbon in the early evening. The driver-guide will see you off at the designated drop-off point. End of tour.
